Ethan can't wait to get out of the small, sleepy town of Gatlin where he has lived all of his life.  His mother is dead, his father has withdrawn from Ethan's life and so it seems as if there is nothing left for him there.  But then the strange and beautiful, Lena Duchannes, moves into town.  Ethan can't explain why he feels so drawn to this person he barely knows.  As the town turns against her, Ethan turns towards her, and realizes that his life in the sleepy old town of Gatlin will never be quite the same.
